Cartographic knowledge is being assimilated by software like OpenStreetMap. Non-cartographers, but therefore local experts, are able to enter and edit local data. The software takes care of proper visualization. 

Well, I know we are not quite there yet, but on the other hand, isn't it a weird situation where strangers do maps about my area? I mean, who knows a region better than a local? ;-)</description>
